Few historical figures were as controversial as Martin Luther. Supporters called him a hero, a freedom fighter, a wise and insightful church leader. Opponents called him a heretic and wanted him killed. Luther called himself a simple monk who, more than anything, wanted peace with God. His search led him to the Bible where he learned about salvation received only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus. This discovery led him to challenge the Roman Catholic Church, the most powerful institution of its day, to return to its roots.
