11-20-11: Bethel Congregation Votes to Transfer from ELCA to NALC

Today Bethel Lutheran Church held a special congregational meeting to take a second vote on a resolution to leave the ELCA and join the NALC (North American Lutheran Chruch).

The resolution passed with 82% of voting members present voting YES.

A total of 307 voting members were present for the meeting. These members cast 251 votes in favor of the resolution (81.7%) and 55 voting against the resolution (17.9%) exceeding the 2/3 count needed. One ballot was not cast. Liz Michael, vice-president of the ELCA Indiana-Kentucy synod council observed the proceedings and closed the meeting in prayer.

This vote is one step in a longer process. The final step required by Bethel's constitution is for the Indiana-Kentucky synod council to approve the application for termination of Bethel's membership in the ELCA. The next synod council meeting is in January.
